Before you book

First-timers should choose comfort over difficulty. Look for a course with forward tees, a friendly reputation, and a pace that won’t feel rushed. If the website is unclear, call the shop. Golf staff answer these questions all the time.

Ask:

  • What is included in the rate?
  • Can beginners play at that time?
  • Are rental clubs available?
  • Is there a dress code?
  • How early should we arrive?

What to pack

Bring the basics and keep it light:

  • Golf balls and tees.
  • Glove, towel, divot tool, and ball marker.
  • Water, snack, sunscreen, and hat.
  • Comfortable shoes with decent grip.
  • A light jacket if the forecast might change.
  • Cash or card for unexpected fees.

At the course

Arrive at least 25-30 minutes early. Check in, find the first tee, roll a few putts, and make sure you know whether carts must stay on paths. If you’re nervous, tell the starter it’s your first time at the course. Most will point you in the right direction.

During the round

Keep the day moving and relaxed. Play the tees that fit you, pick up when a hole gets out of hand, and don’t spend five minutes searching for every ball. The goal is to enjoy golf, learn the layout, and leave wanting another round.

Afterward

Note what worked: tee time, price, pace, course difficulty, and whether you’d return. That small review will make your next affordable golf day easier to plan.
