One week before

Confirm the tee time, arrival time, dress code, payment details, and whether you need a caddie reservation. Check the weather, pack layers, and make sure your shoes are comfortable enough for the course format.

The night before

Set out everything you need:

  • Golf shoes and socks.
  • Glove, balls, tees, pitch mark repairer, and marker.
  • Rain jacket or wind layer.
  • Sunscreen and water bottle.
  • Yardage book or course guide if available.
  • A small amount of cash for tips where appropriate.

On arrival

Get there early enough to breathe. Check in, ask where to warm up, roll a few putts, and learn anything the starter thinks visitors should know. If you’re using a caddie, be honest about your game and usual distances.

During the round

Take photos without slowing play, choose tees that fit, and don’t let one bad hole steal the experience. A bucket-list course is allowed to be difficult. You’re there to play it, not pass an exam.

Quick recap

Preparation creates freedom. Handle the logistics early, bring the right gear, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the first tee instead of rushing to it.
