What these clubs are for
Smart Sole and Halo XL Full-Face exist for one reason: to stop the leading edge digging into the ground. They have very wide, heavily cambered soles that skid rather than dig, so a slightly heavy strike still moves the ball forward at roughly the right speed.
If you have ever bladed a chip across the green after chunking the one before it, these clubs are aimed directly at you.
They are not a compromise
There is a snobbery around forgiving short-game clubs that is entirely misplaced. A golfer who currently loses four or five shots a round to duffed chips will save more strokes with a Smart Sole than with almost any other purchase.
Getting the ball on the green in one shot every time is worth more than the ability to hit an occasional spinning check-up. Play the club that produces the outcome you need.
Smart Sole versus Halo XL Full-Face
Smart Sole is the more specialised of the two. Very wide sole, limited loft options, built specifically for chipping and short pitches. Excellent at the job, less useful for full shots.
Halo XL Full-Face is closer to a normal wedge with extra help. It works for full shots as well as chips and blends more naturally with a Launcher XL iron set.
If you want one club to fix chipping, take Smart Sole. If you want the last club in the set to be more forgiving generally, take Halo XL.
