When to Replace Your Wedges

Wedges are consumables

This is the single most underrated fact in golf equipment. A driver will perform for many years. A wedge will not. Grooves are sharp edges that grip the ball, and every shot from sand, rough or a bunker degrades them slightly.

You will not see it happening. The club will look fine. The spin will simply be lower than it used to be, and shots will release two or three yards further than you expect.

How fast it happens

It depends on how much you play and, more importantly, how much you practise. A golfer who hits fifty wedge shots a week off a range mat will wear grooves far faster than one who plays twice a month.

As a rough guide, a heavily used sand wedge is measurably worn after around 75 rounds of equivalent use. Your lob wedge, hit less often, will last considerably longer.

The signs

Shots release more than they used to. The clearest indicator. Full wedges that used to check now run out.

Spin varies more from wet lies. Worn grooves lose their ability to clear moisture, so wet-condition performance falls off first.

The face feels smooth. Run a fingernail across the grooves. On a fresh wedge it catches at each groove. On a worn one it glides.

Replace one at a time

You do not need to replace the set. The sand wedge does most of the work and wears first. Replace it, keep the others, and stagger the cycle.

Do not sharpen grooves

Groove sharpening tools remove metal and change the groove geometry. The result is not a fresh wedge, it is a non-conforming one with unpredictable spin. Buy a new wedge instead.
