Golf course layout basics
Is Golf Course Layout Basics Right for Beginners?
Yes—learning a few layout cues makes new golfers safer, faster, and more confident.

Beginners need useful cues, not architect jargon
You do not have to know every design term. You need to know where to stand, where to aim, and where not to miss. That alone makes golf feel less random.
Notice these first
- Water, out of bounds, and deep bunkers.
- The widest part of the fairway.
- Whether the green is open in front or guarded.
- Where your next shot would be easiest.
A beginner-friendly par 4 plan
- Tee shot toward the widest grass.
- Second shot to a comfortable wedge distance.
- Wedge to the center of the green.
- Two putts, or pick up in casual play if needed.
Ask the better question
Instead of, “Can I reach it?” ask, “Where can I miss and still have a simple next shot?” Learn that early and you will feel like you belong on any layout.
