How to Compare Golf Equipment

Learn which specs matter, which claims need testing, and how to compare gear fairly.

Compare the same shot

Equipment comparisons go wrong when golfers hit one club warmed up and another cold, or compare perfect strikes to average ones. Test similar balls, same shaft length when possible, and the same target. Pay attention to your normal miss.

Specs that affect play

Spec Why it matters
Loft Launch, carry, gapping
Lie angle Start direction and turf strike
Shaft weight Timing and speed
Bounce Wedge turf and sand performance
Grip size Face control and comfort

Do not worship distance alone

A 7-iron that flies five yards longer but produces a 20-yard left miss is not an upgrade. Consistent carry and predictable direction beat one impressive number. On the course, you need to know whether the ball carries the front bunker and stops.

Bring your gamer

When testing new gear, bring the club it would replace. If a new hybrid does not clearly beat your current 5-wood or 4-iron in the shots you actually face, keep your money.
