The Unwritten Rules of the Putting Green

Protect the green, respect putting lines, and move with quiet awareness.

The green is shared space

Putting greens are delicate and tense. Everyone is close, small movements are noticeable, and an unrepaired pitch mark can affect a ball rolling at dying speed. Walk lightly and repair your mark plus one more if you see it.

Lines, shadows, and markers

Avoid stepping on another player’s putting line, including the through-line beyond the hole. If your shadow crosses their line or ball, move. Mark your ball when it could distract or interfere.

Flagstick manners

Ask before tending or removing the flagstick in casual play. If you are closest to the hole and finished, help manage the flag if the group wants it out. Lay it down gently off the putting surface.

Green checklist

  • Stand still and quiet when someone putts.
  • Read your putt from a respectful distance.
  • Tap in quickly if it will not disturb a line.
  • Move to the next tee before writing scores.
