Use ranges, not verdicts

Benchmarks for greens in regulation are guide rails. A 20-handicapper hitting five greens in regulation is already in a different category from the same golfer hitting two; a 5-handicapper needs to hit at least twelve to have birdie opportunities from manageable distances. A rising GIR percentage over four weeks, even by one or two percent, is meaningful progress for most handicap levels.

Player goal GIR focus
Breaking 100 Get the ball anywhere on the green with a full swing
Breaking 90 Reduce short misses on par-3 tee shots and approach mis-hits
Breaking 80 Hit more greens from inside 150 yards with reliable distance control

Track your trend

If your GIR percentage is climbing even two or three points over a month, your approach play is genuinely improving. One difficult course in bad conditions is not evidence that the trend has reversed.
