Hydration
Common Hydration Mistakes Golfers Make
Most hydration problems come from starting too late, packing too little, or ignoring how much the course and weather change your needs.

Waiting until thirst is obvious
The classic mistake is treating thirst as the starting gun. By the time you’re desperate for a drink, your concentration may already be fading. Golf makes this easy to miss because you’re not sprinting; you’re walking, waiting, swinging, and thinking for several hours.
The usual traps
- Only drinking at the turn: That’s too late for many rounds.
- Relying on coffee alone: It may be part of your morning, but it isn’t a round plan.
- Packing one small bottle: Fine for a cool nine, risky for a hot 18.
- Ignoring sweat rate: Some players simply lose more fluid than others.
- Forgetting juniors and seniors: They may need reminders and easier access.
Hydration and judgment
Poor hydration often shows up as bad decisions before it shows up as dramatic fatigue. You rush a wedge, choose driver when a hybrid is enough, or lose patience after one missed putt. If your back-nine choices get loose, review your fluid and snack habits along with your swing.
Fix the system, not just the symptom
Set up your bag before the round. Know where refills are on the course. Bring a backup bottle when walking. If you play tournaments or long practice days, rehearse your hydration plan just like you rehearse your warm-up. The best plan is the one you can follow without thinking about it every hole.
