Which Mizuno Driver Suits Your Swing?

Matching swing speed, typical miss and preferred shape to the right JPX One head.

Start with your miss, not your speed

Swing speed is the number golfers quote, but the miss is what costs shots. Work out which of these describes your bad drive:

  • Right, weak, losing height — you need launch and forgiveness. JPX One.
  • Right, but with reasonable height — a face-angle and path issue. Loft setting and shaft may matter more than head choice.
  • Left, low, running — you may be closing the face too aggressively. Adding loft can make this worse, not better.
  • Ballooning, stalling, dropping short — too much spin. Consider JPX One Select, teeing lower, and a lower-spin shaft.
  • Scattered in both directions — strike quality is the problem. Take the forgiving head and shorten the shaft.

Speed as a secondary filter

Speed shapes the decision but should not lead it.

Moderate speeds benefit from the larger head, more loft than feels intuitive, and a lighter shaft. Golfers in this bracket routinely play too little loft and lose carry.

Higher speeds open up the Select head, but only if the strike is repeatable. A fast golfer who misses the centre gains more from forgiveness than from low spin.

The loft conversation

Take more loft than your ego suggests. Loft adds carry for most amateurs and makes the face easier to square. The idea that low loft equals distance is one of the most persistent and expensive myths in golf.

If you are between two lofts, take the higher one and adjust down later if the flight is genuinely too high.

Length matters more than head choice

Off-the-rack drivers are often longer than most golfers should play. A shorter driver is easier to centre, and centre strikes beat marginal speed almost every time.

If you are choosing between the two Mizuno heads and cannot separate them, try the same head half an inch shorter. That change frequently does more than switching model.

A short decision path

  1. Slice or lose height → JPX One, more loft, lighter shaft.
  2. Consistent strike, spin too high → JPX One Select, lower-spin shaft.
  3. Not sure → JPX One. It is the safer default and suits more golfers.
  4. Whichever you pick, get the length and shaft weight checked before the head is finalised.

Coach’s tip: If your driver only works when you swing easily, it is too long, too light, or both. That is a fitting problem, not a technique problem.
