Ping Club Naming Explained: G, i-Series, Blueprint and s259

Family name, then descriptor

Every Ping name has a family part and a descriptor part. G440 SFT is family “G440”, descriptor “SFT”. Once you separate the two, the rest of the range stops feeling arbitrary.

The family names

G440 — the current metalwood generation: drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, plus the G440 game-improvement iron.

G740 — the more forgiving iron sibling to G440, built for maximum distance and help.

i-Series — the players’ iron band, currently spanning i240, i530 and i540.

Blueprint — the traditional forged iron family, split into S and T.

s259 — the current wedge family, which replaced s159, which in turn replaced Glide 4.0.

PLD Milled — the premium putter line, alongside a standard Anser and Anser 2 range.

The driver descriptors that matter

• Max — the neutral, high-forgiveness shape. Where most fittings start.
• LST — low spin technology, aimed at faster swingers who already launch the ball high enough.
• SFT — straight flight technology, weighted to bias the shot toward a draw.
• K — Ping’s highest-MOI driver, with a three-position adjustable back weight for draw, fade or neutral bias. An HL version exists for a lighter, higher-launching build.

The iron descriptors that matter

• S vs T in Blueprint — S is a compact cavity back with a little forgiveness; T is a traditional muscleback with almost none. Most golfers who ask for “a blade” actually want the S.
• 240 / 530 / 540 in i-Series — 240 sits closest to a players’ cavity back, 530 adds hollow-body speed, and 540 is the newest of the three, built for pace and a stopping ball flight.
• G vs G740 — G740 is the more forgiving, longer-launching sibling.

The wedge grind letters

s259 grinds describe sole shape, not quality:

• S — versatile, all-round.
• W — maximum forgiveness, suited to a steep attack angle.
• B — low bounce, for firm turf and shallow divots.
• H — a half-moon sole for steep swings on soft turf.
• T — a tour grind for open-face play, with the shortest heel.
• E — an Eye 2-inspired high-toe shape for bunkers and specialty shots.

Reading a full name

G440 K — current metalwood generation, highest-MOI driver shape with adjustable back weighting. Built for a golfer who wants stability without giving up shot-shaping options.

i530 — players’ iron band, hollow-body construction for speed. A compact-looking club for a golfer who wants more from their long irons without moving to G.

Shortcut: If a driver name contains Max or K, expect forgiveness. If it contains LST, expect demands. In irons, Blueprint means least help, G means most, and i-Series sits between the two.
