Fitting is the brand

Ping essentially popularised mainstream custom fitting, and its colour-code system remains one of the most recognisable ideas in golf equipment. The practical consequence is this: a Ping club bought straight off the rack is arguably less likely to suit you than an equivalent off-the-rack club from a brand that doesn’t build its identity around fitting. The system exists precisely because Ping expects you to use it.

What the colour code actually measures

At its core, the colour code is a shorthand for lie angle — the angle between the shaft and the ground when the club is soled correctly at address. Ping assigns a letter or colour to a specific lie angle adjustment relative to standard, and a fitter measures you against it using your height, wrist-to-floor measurement and swing characteristics. The exact chart varies by club type and generation, which is exactly why the number should come from a fitter rather than a guess based on your height alone.

Why lie angle moves the ball left and right

A club that’s too upright sits with the toe off the ground at impact, which tends to send shots left. A club that’s too flat sits with the heel off the ground, which tends to send shots right. This is one of the cheapest fixes available in golf and one of the most overlooked — plenty of golfers chase a swing fault for years that is actually a lie-angle problem.

Length

Off-the-rack length is a starting assumption, not a measurement. A club that’s too long is far more common than one that’s too short, and length changes both your posture and your effective lie angle, so the two should always be fitted together rather than one after the other.

Shaft and grip size

Shaft weight and flex change launch, spin and dispersion more than most golfers expect — often more than switching between two iron models in the same family. Grip size matters just as much: too thin encourages excess hand rotation and can produce hooks, while too thick restricts release and can produce a block. Both are cheap to get right and easy to leave wrong.

Static measurement is only the starting point

A colour-code fitting begins with static numbers — height, wrist-to-floor distance, hand size — but a proper fitting doesn’t stop there. Dynamic testing on a launch monitor, watching where the ball actually starts and finishes relative to target, is what confirms or corrects the static recommendation. Two golfers with identical static measurements can need different lie angles once their swing is on camera.

Verifying a fitting change actually worked

A fitting bay is a controlled environment. The course, weeks later, is not. The real test of a lie-angle or length change is whether your dispersion is genuinely tighter once the novelty has worn off.
