Ping G440 vs G740: Choosing Your Game Improvement Iron

Same band, different depth of help

Both G440 and G740 sit in Ping’s game-improvement band, wider soled and more forgiving than anything in i-Series or Blueprint. The difference between them is how much help each is built to give.

G440: the broad middle

A genuine game-improvement iron with a wide sole, meaningful offset and strong lofts for easy launch. Suits golfers whose strike pattern is inconsistent but not extreme, and who still want the club to look reasonably compact in the bag.

G740: maximum distance and forgiveness

The more forgiving sibling, built for golfers who need the widest possible margin on mishits and the highest possible launch. Expect a larger footprint and a stronger visual presence at address in exchange for that extra help.

What actually separates them

1. Sole width. G740 is wider, resisting digging on fat and thin strikes more aggressively than G440.
2. Launch. G740 is built to get the ball airborne with less swing speed.
3. Forgiveness on off-centre strikes. G740 protects ball speed on toe and heel misses more than G440 does.
4. Look at address. G440 sits closer to a “normal” iron shape; G740 is unapologetically larger.

Which to choose

Pick G440 if your miss is moderate — occasional toe or low-face strikes, but generally near the centre — and you’d rather not carry the largest head available.

Pick G740 if your strike pattern is genuinely wide, if you struggle for height regardless of technique, or if getting the ball airborne matters more to your scoring than how the club looks.

A word on over-correcting

Jumping straight to G740 when G440 would do carries a real cost: very strong lofts can leave you with a pitching wedge so strong it needs an extra gap wedge, and shots that fly high and hot rather than landing softly. Match the depth of help to the size of your actual problem rather than assuming more is automatically better.

Combining them with i-Series or Blueprint

Neither model has to stand alone. G740 long irons into i240 or Blueprint S short irons is a sensible combo for a golfer who needs help launching long clubs but wants control on the scoring irons.
