Who it suits

Mid handicappers whose priority is getting the ball up and keeping distance on off-centre strikes. If your good shots are fine and your slightly thin ones fall twenty yards short, this is the category that solves the problem.

It also suits golfers whose swing speed has dropped — through age, injury or simply less play — and who no longer get the height they used to from their old irons.

Black Ops versus 0311 XP

These overlap, and the honest answer is that a fitting will separate them better than a specification comparison will. Broadly, XP sits within the 0311 family with its familiar shaping language, while Black Ops leans further toward speed and launch.

Hit both. The difference is real but it is a matter of feel and flight more than of category.

The loft question

Forgiving irons are strong-lofted, and Black Ops is no exception. That produces impressive numbers on a launch monitor and creates a large gap below the pitching wedge.

Find the pitching wedge loft before you plan your wedges. A set with a 43-degree pitching wedge needs a different wedge setup than one with a 47.

Consistency of the set

Whatever line you choose, keep the long irons and short irons within one family unless there is a specific reason not to. Mixing lines mid-set produces inconsistent turf interaction and unpredictable gapping.

Buying tip: Ask for the full loft chart, not just the 7-iron. A set that looks long because of one strong number will show it in the gaps everywhere else.
