PXG for Mid Handicappers: The Realistic Setup

What a golfer between 12 and 20 should actually buy from the range.

The head choices

Irons: 0311 XP or Black Ops. Both are built for this player. The wide sole helps on heavy strikes, the strong lofts and low centre of gravity produce height, and the forgiveness holds distance on mishits.

Do not buy 0311 T because it looks better. A mid handicapper in a compact iron loses several strokes a round to lost height on slightly off-centre strikes.

Driver: Lightning Max 10K, or Max Lite if your speed is moderate. High MOI is the property that helps most when your strike pattern is spread.

Wedges: Sugar Daddy III in BP or S grind. The more forgiving sole shapes. Save C grind for when your delivery is more consistent.

The bag shape

Three wedges below the iron set, one hybrid replacing the longest iron, one fairway wood you can hit off the deck, and a driver. That covers everything a mid handicapper faces.

Long irons come out. A 4-iron in the hands of a 16 handicapper is a club hit badly a few times a year.

Where to spend

Fitting, then irons, then wedges. The driver can wait — it is the club most golfers over-invest in and it accounts for a small share of the shots that decide a round.

Where not to spend

A blade or a tour driver head. Both punish exactly the miss you make most often.

A fourth wedge. Three correctly gapped wedges are plenty until your distance control inside 100 yards is genuinely reliable.

Premium shafts you cannot load. A heavy, low-launching shaft chosen because a tour player uses it will cost you height and distance.

The honest expectation

Correctly fitted clubs will tighten your dispersion and make your average shot better. They will not fix a swing fault. If your miss is a slice, the fitting can reduce it — nothing in the bag will remove it.

Fitting tip: Tell the fitter your handicap and your typical miss before you hit a ball. A fitter working from your actual pattern will build you a better club than one working from your best five swings.
