You give up some help and gain a shape you can look at, and for many golfers that trade nets out positive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Do not chase the distance number\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>It is tempting to pick the model that produces the biggest 7-iron figure on a launch monitor. Resist it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Distance from a strong loft is not free — it comes out of your ability to stop the ball on a green. Judge these irons on dispersion and on descent angle, not on the largest single number you can produce.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The wedge gapping consequence\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Both models have strong lofts, and ZXiR’s are stronger. Measure the actual carry gap rather than assuming your old wedge lofts still work — a lot of golfers moving into ZXiR need two wedges where they previously carried one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Long irons in this tier\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Strong lofts make long irons harder to launch, not easier. A ZXiR 4-iron may be too low for you to hold a green with.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>This is why so many sets in this tier sensibly start at 5-iron with a hybrid or two above. Do not feel obliged to carry the long irons just because they came with the set.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Combining with ZXi5\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>ZXi4 long irons into ZXi5 short irons is a strong build for a golfer improving out of the forgiving tier. You keep help where your strike is worst and gain control where it is best.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Buying tip:\u003C\u002Fstrong> Hit ZXi4 and ZXiR back to back with the same shaft before deciding.
