Sub 70 287 Forged Wedges: Grinds and Finishes
A properly made forged wedge at a price that changes how often you replace it.
What it is
The 287 Forged is Sub 70’s current premium wedge — 1020 carbon steel, CNC milled grooves, multiple sole grinds and lofts, offered in raw and tour satin finishes.
That specification list would be unremarkable from a major brand. What is remarkable is the price, and the consequence of that price is more interesting than the club itself.
Why the price matters more than the club
Wedges are consumables. Grooves are sharp edges that grip the ball, and every shot from sand, rough or a bunker wears them slightly. You will not see it happen — the club looks fine and the spin simply drops.
A heavily used sand wedge is measurably worn after a couple of seasons. A cheaper wedge that you replace on schedule outperforms an expensive one you keep too long, every time.
Choosing bounce
Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole, and it determines whether the club digs or skids.
Steep swings and soft turf want more bounce. Shallow swings and firm turf want less. Handicap does not decide this — look at your divots. Deep and long means high bounce; shallow or absent means low.
Choosing grind
Grind is the sole shape that delivers the bounce. It matters most when the face is open: sole the club normally and bounce dominates, but open the face and the grind decides whether the leading edge rises off the ground.
If you are unsure, take the middle option. It fails least often and suits the majority of club golfers in both the sand wedge and the lob wedge.
Raw versus satin
A raw finish rusts deliberately, which slightly improves grip and reduces glare. The effect is real but small. Choose it because you like the look, not because you expect a different score.
Setting the lofts
Work down from your iron set’s pitching wedge in four to five degree steps. Find that loft before ordering anything.
Buying tip: Buy two wedges rather than one premium one, and replace the sand wedge every couple of seasons. Sharp grooves beat a prestigious badge on every single shot.
