A fairway wood is hit off grass, from imperfect lies, when you are trying to reach a green or advance the ball a long way.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>That is a harder shot, and the club that makes it possible saves more strokes than an extra five yards off the tee.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The 3-wood trap\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>The single most common bag fault is a 3-wood that only works off a tee. Fifteen degrees, a long shaft and a shallow face is a difficult combination from a fairway lie for anyone below a high swing speed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Look at the 16.5 and 18-degree options instead, or the Lite at 16 or 20. A shorter, more lofted, deeper-faced club that you can actually hit off grass is worth two you can only tee up.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Matching to your driver\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>There is no rule that your fairway wood must match your driver family, but there is a logic to it. If the Lite driver suits your speed, the Lite fairway almost certainly will too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The exception is a golfer who tees off with a Max driver but wants a lower-spinning fairway for firm conditions. That is a deliberate choice rather than an inconsistency.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The Max hybrid\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Available at 17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees, which reaches further down the bag than most brands offer. A 25-degree hybrid replaces a 5-iron, and for a lot of golfers that swap is a straightforward gain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Test off grass\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>The whole point of a fairway wood is what it does from a fairway lie. A tee hides that, and a range mat hides it completely by letting the sole skid where turf would grab.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Fitting tip:\u003C\u002Fstrong> Take two balls onto real grass and hit both the 15 and the 18.
