Hot Launch is the right side of the range

For a genuine beginner, the Hot Launch brand is where to look. Easy launch, wide soles, draw-biased options and pricing that reflects the fact you are still learning what you need.

Exotics is a premium range, and paying premium prices for a swing that will change substantially within two seasons is poor value however good the clubs are.

Buy fewer clubs than you think

The rules allow fourteen. A beginner needs about seven. A fairway wood or hybrid, an ironwood, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter covers every shot you will face.

Fewer clubs means simpler decisions, faster rounds and more repetitions with each club. All three speed up improvement.

Take the D versions

Almost every beginner slices. Hot Launch Max D clubs are weighted to help the face square through impact, which reduces it.

There is no virtue in fighting a slice with neutral equipment while you learn. Take the help, get the ball in play, and correct the swing with lessons rather than with stubbornness.

The driver question

Consider skipping it at first. A fairway wood or an ironwood off the tee is far easier to hit, and once you account for how often a beginner’s driver finds trouble, the distance you lose is smaller than it looks.

If you do buy one, take plenty of loft. Low lofts punish an inconsistent strike badly.

Wedges

One sand wedge, around 56 degrees, with plenty of bounce. Not a 60 — the lob wedge is the hardest club in golf and beginners buy it far more often than they should.

Where the money should really go

Lessons. A beginner who spends on coaching and a modest set improves faster than one who buys premium clubs and no instruction, and will actually know what to buy second.

Coach’s tip: Carry seven clubs for your first season. You will play quicker, decide faster and learn each club properly rather than half-learning fourteen.
