The driver

Exotics Max if you want the premium construction and the sliding weight, Hot Launch Max if the priority is value. Both prioritise forgiveness, which is what a spread strike pattern needs.

Skip the LS. A 440cc low-spin head punishes exactly the miss this player makes most often, and it will cost height as well as accuracy.

The irons

Exotics Max or Hot Launch Max, or a combo set with ironwoods in the long slots. The forged MB and CB are the wrong clubs here however good they look — a mid handicapper in a muscleback loses several strokes a round to lost height.

If you have bounced off hybrids before because of the shape, this is where the ironwoods earn their place.

The top of the bag

One fairway wood you can hit off grass — 18 degrees is usually more useful than 15 — plus one or two hybrids or ironwoods replacing the long irons.

The wedges

Check the bag gaps before adding anything

The bag above only works if the distances step evenly, and the only way to know is to measure. Where not to spend

Adjustable weights you will never move, a low-spin driver head, or a fourth wedge before your distance control inside 100 yards is reliable.

Fitting tip: Tell the fitter your handicap and typical miss before hitting a ball. A fitter working from your real pattern builds a better bag than one working from your best five swings.
