Turf management
A Beginner's Guide to Turf Management
Learn why the grass changes the shot before you blame the swing.

Turf is part of the course design
Turf management covers mowing, watering, aeration, fertilizing, pest control, traffic control, and repair. Golfers usually notice only the surface, but the maintenance team is balancing playability, plant health, weather, budget, and the schedule of daily play.
What golfers should read first
- Fairway firmness: more bounce and roll when dry, less when soft.
- Rough height: flyer lies, buried lies, or grass that grabs the hosel.
- Green speed: mowing, rolling, moisture, and slope all matter.
- Divot pattern: heavy traffic can make a landing area less predictable.
Course note: A perfect lie is a bonus, not a promise. Read the grass before picking the shot.
How this helps your round
A tight lie might call for less loft. Damp rough may require more club and less heroism. A firm green rewards landing the ball short of the hole. Turf awareness turns course conditions into decisions instead of complaints.
