Buying Wilson Used: What to Look For
Strong value in a market where the badge keeps prices low.
Why Wilson is good value used
The same reputation gap that keeps new Wilson prices sensible depresses used prices further. A previous-generation Staff Model iron set often sells for well below an equivalent set from a bigger brand of the same age and condition.
Since iron heads do not degrade meaningfully with normal use, that is close to free money for a buyer who does not care about the badge.
What to check on irons
Groove wear on the short irons. The 9-iron and pitching wedge see the most abrasive contact. Run a fingernail across the face — it should catch on each groove.
Lie angle. Ask whether the set has been bent, and to what. A set built for a much taller golfer will need adjusting, and forged heads bend easily, so this is fixable but not free.
Shaft. Confirm the model, flex and weight. Sets are frequently reshafted and rarely described accurately.
Consistency across the set. Check that every club has the same shaft and grip. Mixed sets get assembled from parts more often than sellers admit.
What to check on wedges
Grooves, and then grooves again. A wedge is a consumable, and a worn one is worth very little regardless of model. This matters more than anything else on the club.
What to check on drivers and woods
Face for cracking or a dull sound, hosel for signs of a reshaft, and that any adjustable weights and screws are present. Sky marks on the crown are cosmetic and reduce the price usefully.
What is safe to ignore
Bag chatter, sole scratches and a worn grip. None affect performance and all reduce the price. Budget a few pounds for regripping and treat it as a discount.
The models to target
Staff Model CB sets from recent generations, previous Dynapower or D-series game-improvement sets, and Infinite putters. All are recent enough to be technically current in every way that matters.
Buying tip: Ask for a straight-on photograph of the face in good light. A worn set shows a polished band across the grooves that no description will mention.
