Wilson Dynapower Fairway Woods: Max vs Carbon
Two heads with genuinely different jobs, not two names for the same club.
Dynapower Max
The forgiveness option, offered in 15, 18 and 21 degrees. Variable face thickness keeps ball speed up on off-centre strikes, and the head is shaped and weighted to launch easily.
This is the fairway wood for golfers who need to hit the club off the deck and struggle to get it airborne. That is a very large group and it is the more useful of the two for most readers.
Dynapower Carbon
The lower-spinning, more compact head with a carbon crown and a six-way adjustable hosel, offered from 13.5 through 21 degrees.
The carbon crown saves weight that can be repositioned lower and further back, and the adjustability lets you fine-tune loft and face angle. Aimed at faster players who launch the ball high already and want to control spin.
Choosing between them
The mistake is buying Carbon because it sounds more advanced. If your problem is getting a 3-wood up off a fairway lie, a lower-spinning head makes that considerably harder.
Choose Carbon if you hit the ball high and it balloons. Choose Max if it does not get up at all.
The 3-wood problem
The most common fault in a bag is a 3-wood that only works off a tee. Too little loft, too long a shaft, too shallow a face for most golfers to strike cleanly off grass.
A 5-wood at 18 degrees is usually the better club. Shorter, deeper-faced, dramatically easier from a fairway lie. You lose a little from a tee and gain a club you can genuinely use twice a round.
Use the adjustable hosel properly
On the Carbon head, changing loft also changes face angle slightly. Adding loft tends to close the face, which helps a slicer and hurts a hooker. Make one change at a time and hit at least ten balls before judging it.
Test off grass
The only question that matters with a fairway wood is whether you can hit it from a fairway lie. A tee and a range mat both hide the answer completely.
Fitting tip: If you can only hit your 3-wood off a tee, replace it with an 18-degree head. A club you can use from the fairway is worth two you cannot.
