Wilson for Beginners: The Sensible Starting Bag

What a new golfer should buy, and what they should not.

Wilson is a good place to start

Few brands have as much experience building clubs for new golfers, and the pricing is realistic. A beginner buying Wilson is unlikely to overpay or to end up with something unplayable.

Buy fewer clubs than you think

The rules allow fourteen. A beginner needs about seven. A driver or a fairway wood, a hybrid, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter will cover every shot you face while you learn.

Fewer clubs means less confusion about selection, faster rounds and more repetitions with each club. All three help you improve.

The iron tier

Dynapower Max or a complete set. Super game improvement is the correct category for a beginner, whatever anyone tells you about learning with harder clubs. You cannot learn to strike a ball you cannot get airborne.

Avoid anything in the Staff Model family. Those clubs are built for a repeatable strike you do not have yet, and they will make the game harder rather than teaching you faster.

The driver

Consider skipping it initially. A 3-wood or a hybrid off the tee is far easier to hit and loses less distance than you would expect once you account for how often a beginner’s driver finds trouble.

If you do buy one, take plenty of loft. High launch is your friend and low lofts punish an inconsistent strike badly.

Wedges

One sand wedge, around 56 degrees, with plenty of bounce. Not a 60. The lob wedge is the hardest club in golf to hit and it is bought by beginners far more often than it should be.

Where the budget really goes

Lessons, every time. A beginner who spends on coaching and a basic set will improve faster than one who buys premium clubs and no instruction, and will actually know what to buy next.

The upgrade timing

Once you are breaking 100 with some consistency and your typical miss is recognisable, your swing has settled enough for a proper fitting. That is the moment to spend.

Coach’s tip: Carry seven clubs for your first season. You will make faster decisions, play quicker and learn each club properly instead of half-learning fourteen.
