A beginner buying Wilson is unlikely to overpay or to end up with something unplayable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Buy fewer clubs than you think\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>The rules allow fourteen. A beginner needs about seven. A driver or a fairway wood, a hybrid, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter will cover every shot you face while you learn.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Fewer clubs means less confusion about selection, faster rounds and more repetitions with each club. All three help you improve.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The iron tier\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Dynapower Max\u003C\u002Fstrong> or a complete set. Super game improvement is the correct category for a beginner, whatever anyone tells you about learning with harder clubs. You cannot learn to strike a ball you cannot get airborne.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Avoid anything in the Staff Model family. Those clubs are built for a repeatable strike you do not have yet, and they will make the game harder rather than teaching you faster.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The driver\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Consider skipping it initially. A 3-wood or a hybrid off the tee is far easier to hit and loses less distance than you would expect once you account for how often a beginner’s driver finds trouble.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>If you do buy one, take plenty of loft. High launch is your friend and low lofts punish an inconsistent strike badly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Wedges\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>One sand wedge, around 56 degrees, with plenty of bounce. Not a 60. The lob wedge is the hardest club in golf to hit and it is bought by beginners far more often than it should be.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Where the budget really goes\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Lessons, every time. A beginner who spends on coaching and a basic set will improve faster than one who buys premium clubs and no instruction, and will actually know what to buy next.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The upgrade timing\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Once you are breaking 100 with some consistency and your typical miss is recognisable, your swing has settled enough for a proper fitting.
