Wilson for Mid Handicappers: The Realistic Bag

What a golfer between 12 and 20 should actually take from the range.

The iron decision

Dynapower or Dynapower Forged. For a golfer in this band those are the two candidates, and the choice comes down to how consistently you find the middle.

If your strike is reasonable and you want a cleaner-looking iron, Dynapower Forged. If your main issue is height and holding distance on mishits, standard Dynapower.

Staff Model CB is the wrong club here, however good it looks. A mid handicapper in a tour cavity back loses several strokes a round to lost height on slightly off-centre strikes.

The driver

Dynapower 10K MOI Max+, with the loft set higher than instinct suggests. High MOI is the single most useful driver property for a golfer whose strike pattern is spread, and that describes this player exactly.

The top of the bag

One fairway wood you can hit off the deck — Dynapower Max at 18 degrees is usually more useful than a 15 — and one or two hybrids replacing the long irons.

The 4-iron comes out. So, for most golfers in this band, does the 5.

Wedges

Three below the iron set, spaced evenly off the pitching wedge loft rather than off convention. Staff Model ZM covers this well, and the standard profile is the right choice unless you regularly open the face.

Check the bag actually gaps

The bag above is only right if the distances step evenly, and that is a measurement question rather than a design one. FocusGolf picks up swings automatically from a Wear OS, Apple Watch or Garmin watch with nothing attached to the club, recording carry distances and storing each session. Walk the whole bag on a range day and you will usually find one pair of clubs going the same distance — that slot is free, and it is normally better spent on a wedge than on the long iron you are protecting.

Where not to spend

A blade, a low-spin driver head, or a fourth wedge before your distance control inside 100 yards is reliable. All three punish the miss you make most often.

Fitting tip: Tell the fitter your handicap and your typical miss before hitting a ball. A fitter working from your real pattern builds a better club than one working from your best five swings.
