Wilson Staff Model Irons: Blade vs CB vs XB
Three forged irons for three quite different players.
Staff Model Blade
A traditional muscleback. Thin topline, narrow sole, no offset to speak of, and the feedback that comes with a solid forged head and nothing hidden inside it.
It rewards a repeatable strike and punishes everything else. The distance penalty on a mishit is severe, and more importantly the height penalty is severe, so the ball lands flat and runs.
Suitable for consistent ball strikers who want control over flight and who value knowing exactly where they hit it.
Staff Model CB
A forged cavity back with a tour shape. It looks like a players’ iron at address and behaves considerably more forgivingly than the blade, because weight has been moved to the perimeter.
For most golfers who want a Staff Model iron, this is the correct one. It is the classic better-player iron done properly, and the shape at address gives up nothing meaningful to the blade.
Staff Model XB
The newest of the three and the most interesting. A hollow-body construction with urethane inserts to control feel, aimed at players who want tour appearance with genuinely modern ball speed and stability.
This is the players’ performance category — the iron for a good golfer who wants help but does not want a wide sole and a strong loft. If you like the look of the CB but want more speed and forgiveness, hit the XB.
Combo sets are the smart play
Very few golfers are best served by one head through the whole set. XB in the long irons and CB or Blade from the mid irons down keeps forgiveness where mishits cost most.
