The iron ladder

Ordered by how much help the club gives you:

  1. 3DP MB — muscleback blade. Maximum feedback, no assistance.
  2. 3DP Tour — tour iron with a small margin.
  3. KING Tec — compact players cavity back.
  4. 3DP X — players distance, printed internals, more speed.
  5. KING Tec X — players distance with more forgiveness.
  6. KING — game improvement.
  7. KING MAX — super game improvement, largest head, most offset.

Where the real steps are

3DP MB to 3DP Tour is small in appearance and moderate in performance. 3DP Tour to KING Tec is mostly a matter of construction and feel. KING Tec to 3DP X or KING Tec X is the significant step — you move from control into distance and forgiveness. KING Tec X to KING is another real jump, and KING to KING MAX is the largest single step in the range.

If you are agonising between 3DP Tour and KING Tec, you are choosing between neighbours. If you are choosing between KING Tec and KING, you are choosing between philosophies.

Where most golfers belong

Between KING and KING Tec X. That band covers the large majority of club golfers comfortably.

3DP MB is a small-audience club. So is 3DP Tour. Cobra is refreshingly honest about this — its marketing pushes the game-improvement end far harder than most rivals do, which is closer to the truth of who buys clubs.

The drivers are not a ladder

Unlike the irons, the OPTM drivers solve four separate problems rather than sitting on a scale. LS is low spin, X is the all-rounder, MAX-K is maximum forgiveness, MAX-D corrects a slice.

Asking which is “best” is a category error. Ask which problem is yours.

Placing yourself honestly

Use evidence, not ambition:

  • Face wear spread across the whole hitting area → KING or KING MAX.
  • Centred strike but mishits cost real distance → KING Tec X or 3DP X.
  • Consistent centre strike, want control → KING Tec or 3DP Tour.
  • All of that plus maximum feedback → 3DP MB.

Combo sets work here

Cobra’s irons blend well, and the brand supports it. 3DP X long irons into KING Tec short irons, or KING long irons into KING Tec X below, are both sensible builds.

One Length adds a wrinkle — if you go that route, the whole set should be One Length. Mixing lengths defeats the entire premise.

Coach’s tip: Judge an iron on your worst five shots out of twenty. Cobra’s ladder, like everyone’s, is separated almost entirely by what happens on the bad ones.
