The opportunity

Because everything is built to order at close to manufacturing cost, a complete Sub 70 bag with matched shaft weights and consistent lie angles costs less than a single premium iron set.

Very few golfers ever get a coherent bag, because clubs are usually accumulated over years from different sources. If you are building from scratch, take the chance.

Buy in this order

Irons first. The most used clubs and the ones where specification matters most. Settle the tier and the build before anything else.

Wedges second. Set the lofts off the pitching wedge of the irons you just ordered, not off the traditional pattern.

Top of the bag third. One 949X fairway wood you can hit off grass, plus one or two hybrids covering the long irons you dropped.

Driver fourth. The most exciting purchase and the one that changes your scores least.

Putter whenever. Independent of everything else and about aim rather than fitting numbers.

A worked example

699 v2 and 699 Pro combo set from 5-iron to pitching wedge, three 287 Forged wedges below it, 949X hybrid at 22 degrees, 949X fairway at 18, 859 driver, milled putter.

Thirteen clubs, matched shaft weights throughout, one slot spare for a fourth wedge once you know which distance you keep missing.

Keep shaft weights consistent

The most common fault in a bag assembled over years is wildly varying shaft weight. A wedge thirty grams heavier than your 9-iron feels like a different sport.

Since you are ordering everything at once, specify this deliberately. It is the advantage a piecemeal buyer never gets.

Spend part of the saving on fitting

The bag above is only correct if the specifications are correct. An independent fitting before ordering costs a fraction of what you have saved and determines whether the whole build works.

Leave a slot empty if you need to

Thirteen clubs you trust beats fourteen with one you never use. Fill the last slot after a season of play.

Buying tip: Order the whole bag at once if you can, and specify one shaft weight family across it. Coherence across fourteen clubs is worth more than any single upgrade.
