Build to order means every specification is a decision, so make each one.
Custom is the default, not the upgrade
At most brands, non-standard length or lie means waiting longer and paying more. Here, every club is built individually anyway, so specifying is simply part of ordering.
Accepting the defaults wastes the main advantage of buying this way.
Lie angle first
The most ignored specification in golf. Too upright and your irons pull left; too flat and they push right, consistently, regardless of how well you swing.
It takes minutes to measure and minutes to adjust, and forged heads bend easily. There is no reason to play the wrong lie.
Shaft weight before flex
Weight affects tempo, delivery and strike location more than the flex label does. Flex is not standardised between manufacturers, so comparing a stiff from one brand to a stiff from another tells you very little.
Grams are a real, comparable number. Start there and let flex follow.
Graphite is not a compromise
For moderate and slower swings, graphite in the irons is often the correct answer rather than a concession. Lighter shafts let you generate speed you cannot produce with heavy steel, and speed creates height.
Length
Affects strike location more than almost anything. Half an inch too long moves contact toward the heel on every swing, and most golfers play clubs slightly too long rather than too short.
Grip size
Affects hand action. Too small encourages excessive release; too large restricts it. If you consistently miss left, try a larger grip before changing anything else. It is the cheapest experiment in golf.
Read the whole loft chart
Ask for every loft in the set, not the 7-iron number. What matters is the step from the pitching wedge into your first wedge, and that is where most bags have a hole.
Keep the build sheet
Length, lie, loft, shaft, grip, swing weight, written down. When you reorder in three years, that sheet is worth more than the receipt.
Fitting tip: Ask to hit the same head with two shaft weights thirty grams apart before ordering. It is the clearest way to feel what shaft weight actually does to your strike.
