Sub 70 699 Irons: v2 and Pro V3 Explained
The two mainstream iron sets, and which one you belong in.
699 v2
The game-improvement set. Wider sole, more offset, stronger lofts and substantially more help on strikes low on the face and toward the toe.
This is the right set for a golfer whose main problem is getting mid and long irons airborne. If your 6-iron runs along the ground more often than it flies, the forgiveness here will save you shots and there is no case for anything more compact.
699 Pro V3
The players’ distance and players’ cavity back option, and the third iteration of the design. A cleaner shape at address, less offset, more traditional lofts, with meaningful perimeter weighting behind the face.
For a golfer between roughly 5 and 15 handicap, this is usually the right answer. It looks like a proper players’ iron and behaves considerably more forgivingly than one.
Choosing between them honestly
The usual error is choosing the Pro because it looks better at address. That matters — you will not swing freely at a club you dislike — but it matters less than the carry and height you lose on every slightly heavy strike.
Hit ten 6-irons and watch how the ball lands. If most descend steeply enough to stop, the Pro is open to you. If several run out, take the v2 and enjoy holding greens.
The combo set option
Sub 70 offers 699 and 699 Pro as a combo set as standard, not as a special order. That is genuinely useful.
The v2 in the long irons and the Pro V3 from the mid irons down keeps forgiveness where mishits cost most and control where you can use it. Since everything is built to order, it costs nothing extra in complexity.
The loft question
Game-improvement sets are strong-lofted and the 699 v2 is no exception. Find the pitching wedge loft before planning your wedges, because the gap below the set will be larger than the traditional pattern assumes.
The value argument
Both sets are forged and both cost markedly less than equivalents from major brands. That saving is the point of the brand — put part of it toward a fitting and you are ahead on both counts.
Fitting tip: Ask for the full loft chart across the set, not just the 7-iron. One strong loft flatters a set; the whole chart tells you how the bag will gap.
