669 CB

For most golfers who want a better-player Sub 70 iron, this is the correct one. It gives up very little in appearance and a great deal less in forgiveness than the alternatives.

669 TC

The tour cavity — more compact still, less offset, closer to a blade in shaping while retaining a small cavity behind the face.

Aimed at golfers whose strike is genuinely consistent and who want more control over trajectory than the CB provides. The step down in forgiveness from the CB is real.

659 MB

The forged muscleback. Maximum feedback, minimum forgiveness, and the shape a certain kind of golfer has always wanted in the bag.

The distance penalty on a strike half an inch off centre is severe, and the height penalty is worse — the ball lands flat and runs off the back of greens.

Who genuinely belongs in a blade

Golfers whose strike pattern is measurably tight, not merely usually good. Put impact tape on a 6-iron and hit twenty shots. If the marks cover more than a coin-sized area, buy the CB instead.

The honest reason most blades get bought is how they look in the bag, and that costs shots.

Combo sets are the sensible build

Very few players are best served by musclebacks through the whole set. CB in the long irons and TC or MB from the 7-iron down is a far better bag, and Sub 70 builds combos as standard.

The utility iron
