The iron ladder

Ordered by how much help the club provides:

  1. 620 MB — muscleback blade, no assistance, maximum feedback.
  2. 620 CB — cavity back in a tour shape, a small margin added.
  3. T100 — tour precision with modern construction. More forgiving than the 620s.
  4. T150 — T100’s shape with stronger lofts and more speed.
  5. T250 — players distance. Hollow construction, noticeably more help.
  6. T350 — game improvement. The most forgiving of the family.

Where the real steps are

Not every gap on that ladder is the same size.

620 MB to 620 CB is small in look and moderate in performance. 620 CB to T100 is larger than people expect — T100 is a genuinely more playable club. T100 to T150 is mostly loft and flight. T150 to T250 is the biggest step in the range: different construction, different feel, considerably more forgiveness. T250 to T350 is another real step up in help.

If you are agonising between T100 and T150, you are choosing between neighbours. If you are choosing between T150 and T250, you are choosing between philosophies.

Where most golfers belong

Between T250 and T350, with T150 covering the better club golfer.

T100 and the 620s account for a small share of golfers and a much larger share of aspiration. That mismatch is worth naming, because Titleist’s tour presence makes the top of the range unusually attractive.

The driver ladder is not a ladder

Unlike the irons, the GTS drivers are not ranked by forgiveness in a straight line. GTS2 is the most forgiving, GTS3 the most adjustable, GTS4 the lowest spinning, and GT1 the lightest.

Those are four different solutions to four different problems, not four rungs. Choosing “the better one” is a category error here.

How to place yourself

Use evidence rather than ambition:

  • Face wear spread across the whole hitting area → T350 or T250.
  • Centred strike, but mishits still cost real distance → T250 or T150.
  • Consistent centre strike, want control and shot shaping → T150 or T100.
  • All of that, plus you want maximum feedback → 620 CB or 620 MB.

Combining tiers is expected

Titleist’s irons are built to blend, and combo sets are common. T150 long irons into T100 short irons is a standard build. T250 into T150 works just as well a tier down.

Coach’s tip: Judge an iron on your worst five shots out of twenty, not your best. Titleist’s ladder is separated almost entirely by what happens on the bad ones.
