Why it works for good players
Better players are the golfers most affected by small specification errors, because a repeatable delivery turns a two-degree lie error into a consistent miss rather than random scatter.
A brand that builds every club to specification at no upcharge is therefore more valuable to a good player than to anyone else. That is the core of the argument here.
The iron build
669 CB in the long irons and 669 TC or 659 MB from the mid irons down. Forgiveness where mishits cost most, control where you can use it.
Combo sets are standard rather than a special order, so this costs nothing extra in complexity or money.
The top of the set
699U utility iron if you play windy courses or tight tee shots and prefer an iron shape. 949X Pro hybrid if you would rather have the launch.
Test both. The choice is usually about what your eye likes rather than about numbers.
The driver
859 Pro or 859 JD, both 450cc. The Pro is lower spinning with a slight fade bias, which genuinely helps a player fighting a hook.
This is where the demo programme matters most. Three heads this close together cannot be separated on a specification sheet.
The wedges
287 Forged, ordered by bounce and grind rather than by loft alone. Better players usually have a defined delivery, and matching bounce to it is where the gain is.
The price means you can replace the sand wedge annually instead of every four years, which is worth more than any generational technology.
The trade-off to accept
Resale. If you change equipment frequently and rely on trade-in value, buying direct costs you at the other end. Factor that in honestly rather than discovering it later.
Fitting tip: Order the bounce and grind, not just the loft. Two degrees of bounce changes more about how a wedge performs than a whole generation of technology does.
