Sub 70 for Mid Handicappers: The Realistic Bag
What a golfer between 12 and 20 should order, and in what sequence.
The irons
699 v2 or a 699 / 699 Pro combo set. For this player those are the candidates, and the combo is often the better answer — v2 in the long irons for launch, Pro from the mid irons down for control.
The 659 MB is the wrong club here however good it looks. A mid handicapper in a muscleback loses several strokes a round to lost height on slightly off-centre strikes.
The driver
The standard 859. The 460cc head with more forgiveness and a neutral-to-slight-draw bias suits a spread strike pattern and a miss that leaks right, which describes this player.
Take more loft than instinct suggests. Most golfers play too little and lose carry to a low, spinny flight.
The top of the bag
One 949X fairway wood you can hit off grass — 18 degrees is usually more useful than 15 — plus one or two hybrids replacing the long irons.
The 4-iron comes out. For most golfers in this band, so does the 5.
The wedges
Three 287 Forged below the iron set, spaced off the actual pitching wedge loft rather than the traditional 52-56-60 pattern. Mid bounce and a middle grind unless you have a specific reason otherwise.
Check the gaps rather than trusting the chart

Where the saving should go
A fitting, and a spare wedge. Both do more for your scores than upgrading any single club in the bag above.
Fitting tip: Order the wedge lofts at the same time as the irons. Doing it afterwards, once the pitching wedge is already in the bag, is how most gapping problems start.
